About Public Prep
Public Prep launched in 2008 when the founders of Girls Prep Lower East Side realized the need to provide more school choice and equal education opportunities to the children of New York City.
Public Prep is a nonprofit organization that develops single-sex elementary and middle public schools that pursue excellence through continuous learning and data-driven instruction. Our model is designed to empower each student to build strong character, demonstrate critical thinking, possess a core body of knowledge and be on a predictive path to earn a degree from a four-year university.
Our Schools
Public Prep is currently comprised of three, tuition-free all-girls charter schools that are open enrollment and can only be entered via a random lottery. There are no additional fees, tuition, or testing for enrollment.
Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary, the first all-girls charter school in New York City and the inaugural school in our network, was launched in 2005 and serves 340 students in grades K-4. Girls Prep Middle School opened in fall 2009 and serves 235 students in grades 5-8. Girls Prep Bronx also opened in 2009, and serves 370 students in grades K-4(growing to grade 5). Girls Prep Bronx Middle School is set to open in fall of 2014. For academic year 2012-13, nearly 1000 Public Prep students are part of the network. In addition, Public Prep has been awarded a charter to open its first all boys school, Boys Prep.
Public Prep’s elementary and middle schools serve urban districts in which students face significant academic and social risk factors. Our schools are inclusive, and offer services for special needs students with Individualized Education Programs or whom are English Language Learners.
Public Prep's schools work to ensure that its students go on to high performing high schools and graduate from college. Everything we do is designed to help our students achieve that goal.
