Josie Carbone
Principal
Josie Carbone is the founding principal of Girls Prep Bronx and a proud graduate of a single-sex college. An educator for the past fifteen years, Josie is deeply committed to educational equity and social justice. Prior to opening her school in August 2009, she completed a year-long leadership residency at Girl Prep Lower East Side. During her residency, Josie immersed herself in the Girls Prep curriculum and culture. She is now thrilled to bring the option of a Girls Prep education to families in the Bronx. Josie graduated from Smith College and is an alumna of Teach for America. While teaching at PS 63 in Morrisania, she earned a masters degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Bank Street College.
In 2003, Josie left the New York City Department of Education and joined the start-up team of Bronx Charter School for the Arts in Hunts Point, where she served first as a founding Lead Teacher and then as the Lower School Director. While completing her Girls Prep Leadership Residency, Josie also finished a fellowship with New Leaders for New Schools and worked towards her masters in Educational Leadership. Josie has served on the adjunct faculty at Bank Street College where she has taught courses in Urban Education and Classroom Management. She lives in Inwood with her family.
Katie Carroll
Director of Student and Family Affairs
Katie Carroll is the Director of Student and Family Affairs. Katie comes to Girls Prep from a Charter School in Harlem where she was the Dean of Culture and the Lower School Dean of Students, Family and Community. Prior to being Dean, Katie taught first grade and kindergarten in Harlem and in Cleveland. Katie is excited to be part of the GP Bronx founding staff. She is enjoys working with students and families and is looking forward to developing relationships with all of our community members at Girls Prep.
Erica Hunt
Director of Operations
Erica joins the Girls Prep Bronx team as the Director of Operations. After 5 years in corporate sales and marketing, Erica transitioned into the education sector where she worked as the Assistant Director of External Affairs for a network of charter schools in New York City. While in this role, Erica was responsible for planning and executing high-impact initiatives such as space and PEP hearings, parent advocacy events, and annual fundraisers. Erica also worked on a multi-media student recruitment campaign and assisted with updating the enrollment and on-boarding processes.
Erica holds a BA from Spelman College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. As a graduate of an all-female high school and an all-female college, Erica is a strong proponent of single-sex education. She is passionate about education reform and excited to join the Girls Prep community.
Evelyn Marcano
Family Coordinator
Evelyn Marcano graduated from BMCC with an AA in Business Administration and went on to earn her Bachelors in Education at the City College of New York. She taught at a BMCC Early Childhood Center for six years in a pre-k 3 room. She loves being a part of the Girls Prep team and helping families begin the important journey of their daughter's education.
Mirham Rojas
Administrative Associate
Mirham is a recent graduate of the College of New Rochelle. After attending an all-women’s college, Mirham appreciates the single-sex environment of Girls Prep. She is a proud Bronx native who enjoys writing and tutoring. She joined Girls Prep this year and loves the committed families and staff.
Nieves Veras de Torres
Office Manager
Nieves is extremely excited to be joining the Girls Prep Bronx team for the 2011-2012 school year! She transitioned from Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary School after having worked there two and a half years, and she hopes to always welcome the Bronx students, families, and staff with a smile and courteously in the Main Office. Nieves completed her Bachelor's in Translation & Interpretation at Hunter College - City University of New York.
Having immigrated to the United States at a young age, Ms. Veras has experienced first-hand the New York City public education system, and she has a great appreciation for educators and administrators who devote themselves to ensuring that students have the best experience educationally-possible.
She is looking forward to working jointly with the staff to ensure that our girls are on the right path and working towards attending college some day!

Adam Aguirre
Third Grade Lead Teacher
Adam is thrilled to be working with the third grade students in Maria Tallchief with Ms. Nuñez! He has a degree in Government, Philosophy, and Theater from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He is thrilled to work with the amazing and supportive staff at Girls Prep.
In his free time, Adam likes to run, read awesome books, go to art museums, and roam the wonderful borough that is Brooklyn. He is thrilled to share his love of learning, reading, and discovery with all his students.
Molly Betty
Second Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Molly is thrilled to be joining the Girls Prep team as a second grade CTT teacher in the Patricia Polacco class. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, Molly earned a B.A. in Romance Languages at the University of Oregon. She moved to New York in 2006 to pursue an M.S. Ed in Childhood General and Special Education at Bank Street College of Education.
Outside of work, Molly enjoys reading, playing soccer, and exploring New York City.

Kelly joined the Girls Prep Bronx team during the 2011-12 school year.
Amy Canzonetti
Kindergarten CTT Lead Teacher
Amy Canzonetti is excited to be a teacher in the Joan Ganz Cooney kindergarten classroom this year. Before coming to Girls Prep, Amy taught kindergarten at Claremont Preparatory School in Manhattan and Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx. She received her BA in History and MA in Elementary Education from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. She is currently working towards an extension of her MA in Special Education from Mercy College.
Amy is originally from Connecticut, but she now enjoys living in Manhattan, NY. One of her favorite things to do is walk around the city on a sunny day, exploring all the fantastic sights. Ever since she was little, Amy wanted to be a teacher. She is looking forward to helping her students work hard and be successful in a happy and creative journey through kindergarten!
Sharon Cook
Kindergarten Lead Teacher
Sharon was born in Harlem and raised in the Bronx. She attended P.S. 62 on Fox Street where she fell in love with books. She received a B.A. in English Literature from Baruch College and her Master's degree in elementary education from Rollins College.
After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, Sharon worked as an actress and has worked at a number of non-profit organizations assisting low-income families. After volunteering at Free Arts for Abused Children organization and many elementary schools, she decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. Sharon is excited to be teaching in her own community and hopes to instill in Girls Prep scholars her love of learning that was nurtured in the Bronx.
Outside of the classroom, Sharon loves to read and cites Toni Morrison and Louise Erdrich among her favorite authors. Her other interests include independent films and traveling. Her travels have included China, Fiji, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, New Zealand, and Australia.
Monique Duncan
Third Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Monique Duncan is thrilled to join Girls Prep Bronx as a founding First Grade Lead Teacher. After graduating from Temple University with a BA in Journalism, Monique enrolled in an education program at Iona College and obtained her master’s degree in Childhood Education. She was a founding Lead Teacher at the Bronx Charter School for Excellence where she served as a mentor teacher. Monique later moved on to help develop literacy curriculum and train teachers as a professional developer at an educational non-profit organization. She has written children’s books that encourage the development of good character and is dedicated to educating and positively impacting our youth.
Julia Martin
Second Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Julia Martin grew up in New Rochelle, New York and graduated from New Rochelle High School. She attended Harvard University where she majored in History of Science with a focus on Developmental Psychology. After graduation she joined Teach for America and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Missing the seasons and her family she moved back to New York. Ms. Martin is thrilled to be part of the Girls Prep community!
Sally Mayas
First Grade CTT Lead Teacher
A graduate of a single-sex high school and a Seven Sister College, Sally is thrilled to be joining the Girls Prep team as one of the head teachers in the Majora Carter First Grade. Sally grew up in Ossining, NY and from an early age knew she wanted to become a teacher. She worked for a number of children’s theater programs before going on to Vassar College and earning a degree in American History and a correlate in Education. Sally then went on to work as an assistant teacher in a K-12 school in Poughkeepsie while running an after school-tutoring program through Vassar College for the students of Poughkeepsie Middle School.
In the fall of 2009, Sally moved to New York City where she worked in a number of schools and diverse communities as a museum educator. She is currently attending Bank Street College of Education to obtain a Master’s degree in Special Education.
In her spare time, Sally enjoys reading, bike riding, running, and going to museums. She is excited for a great first year at Girls Prep.
Mollie Murphy
Third Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Mollie Murphy is teaching in the Jill Abramson third grade this year! Mollie studied psychology and music at Vassar College and earned her Master’s in General and Special Education at Bank Street College. Prior to working at Girls Prep, she taught 4th grade at The Parkside School for children with language-based learning disabilities.
During the summer, Mollie serves as the behavior specialist at a sleepaway camp run by the Coalition for the Homeless, training new counselors on proactive behavior management techniques and working intensively with campers with emotional and behavioral challenges.
Outside of the classroom, Mollie enjoys exploring new neighborhoods and playing the violin and guitar. She is looking forward to a great year with the third grade team and her students!
Liz O'Connell
First Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Liz O'Connell is excited about her second year as a member of the Girls Prep Bronx team. She graduated from Tulane University and then earned her Master's degree in Literacy and Language from Framingham State College in Massachusetts. She taught for many years in Canton, Massachusetts as an elementary classroom teacher and then a Reading Specialist. She moved to New York in 2007 and spent two years teaching third and first grade at a charter school in the Bronx. Last year, she joined the GP Bronx first grade team. When she has free time, Liz loves running, biking, rock climbing and cooking. She loves teaching first graders because of their curiosity and excitement for learning!
Jennifer Poole
Kindergarten CTT Lead Teacher
Jenny Poole is so excited to be teaching in the Joan Ganz Cooney kindergarten classroom this year. Prior to teaching at Girls Prep, Jenny taught second grade in Ohio, and kindergarten and first grade in Brooklyn. She received her BS in Early Childhood Education from Ohio University, and recently completed her MA in the Literacy Specialist program at Teachers' College. Jenny grew up in Ohio, and loves to visit home for the backyard barbeques and campfires. Her favorite thing about New York is visiting the museums! Jenny loves teaching kindergarteners to embrace their curiosity and playfulness while learning about the world around them. She was always reading as a child, and hopes that her students will love to do the same!

Isa Rodriguez
First Grade Lead Teacher
Isa loves teaching at Girls Prep! She joined this wonderful team as a founding 1st grade fellow in the Ruby Bridges class. Last year Isa had the pleasure of teaching in the 2nd grade Tania Leon class with Julia Stawiski. This year she returned to the 1st grade Ruby Bridges class as a lead teacher and loves it!
Before Girls Prep, Isa received her B.A. in English Literature at Hunter College. While completing her undergrad, Isa worked as an afterschool and summer camp counselor in the South Bronx. She also worked in a preschool for children with special needs for two years. Earlier this year, Isa received her M.A. in Childhood Education at Hunter College.
During her free time, Isa loves to read, write, listen to music, and go on adventures with her dog. Isa loves working in a single-sex school that is committed to helping students succeed in life no matter what obstacles they encounter.
Noelia Rodriguez
Second Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Noelia proudly joined the Girls Prep Bronx teaching community as a lead 2nd grade teacher of the Patricia Polacco classroom during the 2010-2011 school year.
As a native New Yorker currently residing in the Bronx, Noelia earned her Masters of Science in Education (1-6) from the City University of New York. Prior to joining Girls Prep, Noelia spent seven years teaching second and third grade students at a charter school in Harlem and is truly excited about starting a new chapter in her teaching career at Girls Prep.
Jessica Sargunas
Second Grade CTT Lead Teacher
Jessica teaches 2nd grade in the Wilma Rudolph classroom this year!
Jessica grew up in Connecticut and earned her BS in Early Childhood Education and a BA in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University. She will complete her MA in Literacy K-12 by summer 2011.
Jessica came to New York City this year, and since then has been dedicated to helping her students reach above and beyond their potential. Outside of the classroom, Jessica enjoys traveling, bike riding, football, and spending time with friends and family.
Nicole Schultheis
Kindergarten Lead Teacher
Nicole grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is excited to be teaching kindergarten this year in the Helen Keller classroom. She earned her B.A. in Early Childhood Education at Penn State University and her M.A. in Literacy Education from Hunter College. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, watching independent films, and visiting art galleries. She also likes staying active with physical activities such as hiking, kickboxing, and running.
Julia Stawiski
Second Grade Lead Teacher
Julia teaches 2nd grade in the Tania Leon classroom. Since joining the Girls Prep Bronx team this year, she’s been continually amazed at how everyone works together so thoughtfully throughout the school community!
Julia grew up in Michigan and earned her Bachelors degree from Bates College in Art, with a minor in Spanish in 2003. She began teaching elementary school in Washington Heights that same year, and went on to earn her Masters degree in Elementary Education from City College in 2005. She eventually switched from teaching upper elementary to teaching kindergarten in 2007 and became increasingly interested in learning more about early childhood literacy. She then decided to attend the Cosby Program for Early Reading Intervention through Fordam University, graduating in January, 2010.
Julia’s favorite part of teaching is reading funny stories with students and seeing them fall in love with books. Outside of school, she thoroughly enjoys exploring the many cultures of New York City, particularly when she gets the chance to eat new foods from around the world.

Andrea Bonnici
Second Grade Associate Fellow
Andrea Bonnici is thrilled to be joining the Tania Leon classroom as a 2nd Grade Associate Teaching Fellow this year! Prior to joining Girls Prep, Andrea worked for several years as a publicist for one of the largest PR firms in Manhattan. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Communications and following her lifelong goal to become a teacher, she recently received a Masters in Elementary and Special Education from St. John’s University.
Outside of the classroom, Andrea enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
Annayanna Haldar
First Grade Fellow
Annayanna was born in Bangladesh and immigrated to the United States at the age of 2. Through watching her parents struggle to make their mark, she learned the value of hard work and the importance of having an education. From an early age, Annayanna knew that she wanted to be a teacher, so it was no surprise what she would go to college for! Annayanna received her B.A in Childhood Education from Hunter College in 2011 and is now returning to complete her Masters in Special Education at Hunter College.
In her free time, she loves to read, watch scary movies and hiking in the great outdoors.
Julie Nuñez
Third Grade Associate Fellow
Julie Nunez attended Binghamton University and now holds a BA in Sociology and Africana Studies. She is thrilled to have been a founding Kindergarten fellow and is currently supporting the Sonia Sotomayor first grade class. Growing up on the Bronx, she always knew she'd work with children. Julie is super excited that she gets to start her career so close to home at Girls Prep Bronx! Although single sex education was not a possibility for her as a child, Julie is happy to see that it has become an available option to ALL little girls in NYC.
Daniella Rohr
Kindergarten Associate Fellow
Daniella Rohr graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied American History and Urban Education. She is so excited to be back in her hometown of New York City teaching in the Joan Ganz Cooney Kindergarten class this year! While in college, Daniella worked in various Philadelphia public schools as a student teacher, tutor, and mentor. She also worked for a nonprofit social service agency that helps Latin American immigrant women and their families.
Outside of school, Daniella loves reading and writing, swimming, and spending time with her family and friends. She deeply believes that all students have the ability to succeed and is so excited to help her student reach their greatest potential!
Kathy Salinas
Kindergarten Fellow
Having been a product of single sex education Kathy is very excited to be working at Girls Prep where she can provide her students with the same experience and great education that she received while in school.
In her first year at Girls Prep Kathy worked as a school aide and earned a B.A in Sociology and Early Child Education from Lehman Community College. This year she is thrilled to be teaching in the Helen Keller class!
Veronica Vazquez
Kindergarten Associate Fellow
Veronica was born and raised in the Bronx. Having been a product of single sex education Veronica is thrilled to be working at Girls Prep where she can give her students the same great education that she personally received when she was in school.
Prior to teaching at Girls Prep, Veronica earned a B.A in sociology from Barnard College. Veronica knew from a very young age that teaching was meant for her, and has been working ever since to achieve that goal. Having worked for different educational programs and several years in a summer day camp, Veronica is always committed to working with children and their families. She deeply believes that children are amazing people and is humbled by the fact that she gets to spend her days with them.

Caitlin Hanretty
Physical Education Lead Teacher
Caitlin Hanretty graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland and a Masters Degree from Canisus College. Originally from Buffalo, New York Caitlin moved and started working in New York City Public Schools 6 years ago. She gained a lot of experience working with middle school children in the Bronx.
This is Caitlin's second year teaching Physical Education at Girls Prep Bronx. She is really excited to see the girls grow and improve in their physical skills. Along with being the Physical Education teacher Caitlin is also part of the Community Council. Her role of Staff Representative, makes her actively involved in afterschool activities and family events such as BINGO night, Family Game Night, Family Movie Night, Welcome Back Pot Luck, The Winter Festival as well as monthly meetings. Caitlin is looking forward to a successful second year at Girls Prep Bronx.
Katie Hopkins
Visual Art Teacher
Katie Hopkins is thrilled to join the team at Girls Prep!After receiving an MFA in Printmaking in her home state at Colorado State University, she moved to New York City to teach with the non-profit Studio in a School.While with the organization, Katie received an Advanced Certificate in Art and Design Education at Pratt University and became a certified NYS teacher.Katie continues to exhibit and pursue her professional art career.Her personal work as an artist is integral to her practice as a visual arts instructor, teaching the students how to see the world as an artist and to discover their own potentiality.
Elizabeth Maderal
Dance and Yoga Lead Teacher
Elizabeth Maderal can remember dance being a part of her life from the beginning. Growing up in metro Detroit she went on to study dance at the University of Michigan. The art of Dance brought her to find her second love, yoga. After discovering yoga at the American Dance Festival seven years ago, she went on to get three trainings, in Kundalini Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and Childrens yoga. In pursuit of the stage she found herself in NYC, ready to embark on sharing the fruits of movement, sound and breath with others. Elizabeth has taught yoga and dance to Yogis of all ages in the NYC area for the past five years. She has been a dancer for the Leanne Schmidt and Company for the past four years. She was lucky to be part of the Girls Prep LES school in its beginning years and is thrilled to be part of the amazing family again. Through dance and yoga she has found her true voice and hopes to provide the same opportunity for the girls prep students.
Lenore Nelson
Music Lead Teacher
Leonore Nelson is excited to be part of such a musical community at Girls Prep Bronx. She grew up in central Connecticut and then attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst where she received her Bachelor’s degree in music performance, concentrating on solo singing and Opera. She continued her musical career in the Washington DC area, where she sang in several professional choirs, in addition to starting her work as a private music teacher and choir director. In 2008, Ms. Nelson moved to New York City to study at Teachers College where she earned a Masters in Music Education. Since moving to the city, she has worked as a Teaching Artist and taught privately in the Bronx and Harlem. Her specialties are teaching singing, choir and piano.
In addition to music, Ms. Nelson loves to travel, get to know different cultures, and learn languages. She lived in Berlin, Germany for 3 years, learning German and teaching students there to speak English. She is now working on French and hoping to start Spanish this year. After a long day at school, Ms. Nelson loves to unwind by going Kickboxing.

Evette Alba
Lead School Aide
Evette began teaching in the Girls Prep after-school program in 2006. She became a school aid the next year and officially joined the Girls Prep team. Evette brings her Lower East Side expertise to the Bronx founding staff. As the Lead School Aid, Evette supports dance and music instruction, helps out in the office, and ensures that everything runs smoothly across the school. She loves working with all of the students, teachers and families at Girls Prep Bronx. She is pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education at BMCC.
Jessica Crosby
Reading Specialist
Jessica Crosby is the Reading Specialist for Girls Preparatory Charter School. She began her teaching career when she received a grant from Southern Community Partners to found a non-profit program, Reading for Life, in her hometown of Port Gibson, MS. She fell in love with reading instruction while reading literature and working with students to turn their storytelling and art work into books to read. This motivated her to receive her Master's degree in Language and Literacy from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education. After some classroom teaching she became a Reading Specialist in Boston, MA at Neighborhood House Charter School. When Massachusetts received the Reading First grant, she became a Regional Professional Development Provider supporting schools in the implementation of the reading program. Missing the community of a school and working with students, she joined the Boston Public Schools as a Reading Coach at the Paul A. Dever Elementary School. Jessica hopes to find time to continue her quilting while exploring this great city.
Bridget Garrity
ELL Specialist
Bridget is a proud member of the Girls Prep Bronx founding teacher team. She graduated SUNY Geneseo in 2003 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Spanish. She learned Spanish while studying abroad in Seville, Spain and her love of learning another language is what lead her pursue her Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Hunter College. Bridget currently is part of the BETLA (Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leadership Academy) program at Bank Street College, where she is learning leadership skills that she can share at Girls Prep. Bridget is excited for the second year of Girls Prep Bronx and looks forward to working with all the English Language Learners in grades K-2.
Shirley Guerra
School Aide
Shirley joined Girls Prep Bronx in its opening year and loves growing as a teacher and learning from the girls and her colleagues. Prior to joining Girls Prep’s founding team, Shirley spent three years as a paraprofessional at the Bronx Charter School for the Arts. In her spare time, Shirley volunteers at hospitals and prisons and is a chaplain.
Brittany Hastings
Special Education Teacher
The 2010-2011 school year Brittany's first year at Girls Prep Bronx. Prior to working at Girls Prep Bronx, Brittany was the Learning Specialist at Hunter College Elementary and taught 3rd grade at Congers Elementary in Rockland County. She also co-taught 2nd grade at Tappan Zee Elementary in Rockland County. While teaching at Tappan Zee Elementary, she was also the Response to Intervention (RTI) teacher for the 2nd and 3rd grades.
Brittany earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies from James Madison University and a Master of Science Degree in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities from St. Thomas Aquinas College. Brittany is very excited to join the Girls Prep Bronx family!
Iva Taylor
Literacy Instructional Coach
Iva Taylor, a founding member of the Girls Prep Bronx team as the school’s Instructional Coach, is looking forward to her (slightly new) role this year at the school’s Literacy Instructional Coach. Iva has been teaching in charter schools in Hunts Point since 2003, where she was a founding teacher and later the Literacy Coach at Bronx Charter School for the Arts. Prior to 2003, Iva taught first grade for several years in Mississippi as a Teach for America corps member. Iva holds a Master's degree in Classroom Literacy from Bank Street College of Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Theater from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. Most recently, Iva served as an adjunct faculty member at Bank Street College of Education, where she taught the College’s graduate course on Teaching Reading Comprehension. Iva recently moved to Queens, and enjoys visiting her family in North Carolina as often as possible, especially her two adorable nieces and her newest niece and nephew – twins!! – born last year. Iva enjoys hearing and telling stories, trying new foods and learning new things, and of course, reading.
Anne Yackee
Social Worker
Anne Yackee, LCSW, has worked with children and families throughout New York City since her sophomore year at NYU. A graduate of Hunter College's Advanced Standing School of Social Work program, she has been employed in schools, child welfare agencies, pediatric hospitals/residences and out-patient mental health clinics. Anne has learned a lot about resiliency, empathy and fairness from the children she has worked with in the past and is excited to have the opportunity to continue to learn and grow within Girls Prep Bronx.
Donise Brown
School Aide
Donise is extremely proud to be joining the Girls Prep Bronx team. Having been a product of single-sex education, Donise is excited to share my experience with the girls. She studied Social Work at Virginia Union University. Her future plan is to return to college and study in the field of Early Childhood Education.

Angela Maria
School Aide
Angela Maria was born in the Dominican Republic, in the second most important city there – Santiago. She went to Bronx community college where she earned an Associate degree in Accounting.
Last year, she was a volunteer at Girls Prep and this year, she works as a School Aide. She is married and has two children. Her daughter attends Girls Prep. Angela is so proud to be part of the Girls Prep staff. Her goal is to continue working hard and go back to school to get a Bachelor’s degree in Education.
Morgan Altman
Math Instructional Coach
Morgan Altman is proudly joining the Girls Prep Bronx team as the new instructional math coach. She is truly looking forward to collaborating with the GPB community as a math learner and teacher. Prior to becoming a GPB team member Morgan spent 7 years working at The Brooklyn Charter School. She also had the opportunity to teach at University Child Development School and Islandwood Environmental Learning Center while living is Seattle, Washington. Morgan has a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Rutgers University, Douglass College. She earned a Masters degree in Environmental Education from Brooklyn College and is currently in the Math Leadership Program at Bank Street College of Education.
Nichole Ladopoulos
Learning Specialist Coordinator
Nichole is pleased to join the Girls Prep Bronx team this year as the Learning Specialist Coordinator. In this role, she will collaborate with families, teachers, specialists and the instructional leadership team in the service of our students’ social, emotional, behavioral and academic growth. Her favorite thing about this truly inclusive community is our capacity to provide students with individualized attention and a wide variety of supports.
Nichole first developed an interest in teaching, while volunteering as an art instructor in Detroit’s public schools. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 2003, she joined the New York City Teaching Fellows, and pursued her Master of Science with a concentration in Elementary Education. Her teaching career began in the Bronx in a traditional public school where she worked in a variety of program recommendations, from collaborative team teaching classrooms to self-contained special education classrooms ranging from Kindergarten through sixth grade.In 2006, she joined the Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary to provide Special Education Teacher Support Services and at-risk student support as well as facilitate Child Study Teams and the Individualized Education Program process. As the Director of Special Education at Public Prep from 2009-2011, she worked with the staff of Girls Prep Bronx Elementary, Girls Prep Lower East Side Elementary and Middle Schools to improve special education and at-risk student services across the network.
She is currently pursuing a Master of Education in the Leadership for Educational Change Program at Bank Street College of Education with a focus on Special Education. She also enjoys drawing, painting, yoga, reading, and trying new restaurants around the city.
