OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Our Educational Approach

At Public Prep, we are passionate about making education both challenging and joyful. We believe this fusion cultivates true engagement. We know that our scholars will be the leaders of tomorrow, and they deserve a rich and rigorous program that will set them up to lead their communities.

Our academic framework is marked by a demanding curriculum delivered through personalized, culturally rich instruction. We prioritize inclusivity and diversity, ensuring students encounter a wide spectrum of perspectives and voices across all subjects. This approach empowers our scholars to discover their own voices through meaningful dialogue, exploration, and real-world application of their knowledge.

Here's a glimpse into what our curriculum offers:

Our students enjoy a diverse daily schedule, including sessions in reading, writing, math, math, science, social studies, physical education, fine and performing arts, and a wealth of enrichment opportunities during and after school. To support the diverse needs of our individual learners, we also provide daily additional academic assistance for all who need it.

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM SPECIAL?

Math

In our mathematics classrooms, our scholars make meaning of complex, real-world situations through inquiry, collaboration, and feedback. Every scholar leaves Public Prep with a rich, hands-on understanding of mathematical concepts and a strong set of problem-solving tools.

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM SPECIAL?

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

Public Prep is dedicated to nurturing and uplifting the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Embracing the philosophy to "start early with the end in mind," we've established a scalable and impactful model of STEM education for young learners that lays a strong foundation so they are ready for the jobs of tomorrow.

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM SPECIAL?

History

The leaders of tomorrow must have a strong understanding of the past. That's why, starting in our youngest grades, scholars engage in literacy-based, rich history coursework with an emphasis on equity and social justice. In this course, scholars will read rich, non-fiction historical texts, supporting their critical thinking and writing.

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM SPECIAL?

Arts, PE & Extracurriculars

At Public Prep, we develop the whole scholar-strengthening their mind, body, and imagination. Our challenging and balanced curriculum is delivered by experts certified in their fields. From Dance and Theater to Visual Arts and Physical Education, scholars have opportunities to expand their interests and discover their passions, both during and after school.

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAM SPECIAL?

Intervention and Support

At Public Prep, we believe that all scholars deserve to succeed. We are committed to offering the individual interventions that each scholar needs to be successful, both through our co-teaching classroom model, small group instruction, counseling, and multiple therapies that scholars deserve.

PPN_Bediako, Adwoa (23-24)

"High-quality STEM education equips students with critical thinking skills, collaboration, and inquiry-based exploration that will prove vital in the workforce. Currently, African Americans make up less than 10% of the STEM workforce, not due to lack of capability or skills, but directly linked to disparities in opportunities and access. My STEM vision is to provide a STEM education that serves students who need us utmost, in a way that inspires, encourages, and supports their pursuits toward STEM careers."

GPBXM Dance

When I came to Girls Prep, I was academically delayed in all subjects. I was on a first-grade reading level while in the third grade. I struggled with writing and grammar. The staff here took my situation seriously. By the middle of the school year, I was in Read180, a program designed to help scholars improve their reading and writing skills on a one-on-one level. Girls Prep empowered me to go on to high school and be able to balance school and a job and still maintain above a 3.5 GPA.

I was introduced to Breakthrough New York through Girls Prep and was able to study abroad. I never would have thought I would have this opportunity. I was able to learn a new language and think about my future over the summer. I now attend Cathedral High School and am figuring out what college I want to go to. University of Arizona was my first acceptance! I was accepted to multiple SUNYs and private institutions including Smith University. I'm very proud of myself for accomplishing this and reflecting on my time at Girls Prep, I am so grateful for the experience. It led me here today.

After-school and Summer Programming

After-school Programming: Public Prep schools offer robust after-school programs with a variety of activities and academic support including tutoring and homework help. From fashion, art, dance, and cooking clubs to sports, such as basketball, volleyball, and soccer, our after-school clubs and sports are led by coaches and specialists with extensive experience and expertise. Each school has its own after-school programming and hours, and you can find more information about specific offerings on your school's page.

Summer Programming (Summer Boost): Last summer, our Summer Boost scholars demonstrated exceptional growth in ELA and Math, outperforming the majority of Summer Boost programs across the city and nation.

Public Prep offers a special, arts and academics summer learning experience for scholars in rising 3rd through rising 8th grades. We set scholars up for long-term success in ELA and Mathematics by developing essential academic skills as scholars engage in the arts and sports, including dance, costume design, theater, visual art, basketball, and soccer. Learning is not only focused in the classroom, as students go on a range of field trips, including dance performances at the New Victory Theater, private tours of the Museum of Modern Art, and a joyful trip to a water park.

To top it all off, we end our summer programming by celebrating scholars' hard work and accomplishments with an Academics and Arts Showcase for friends and families!
