I'm originally from Harlem however I moved to the Lower East Side when I was in 3rd grade. My mom started looking for schools in the new neighborhood. Thankfully, she found Girls Prep Elementary.
When I got there, I was academically delayed in all subjects. I was on a first-grade reading level and didn't know basic math like multiplication. I struggled with writing and grammar. By the middle of the year, I was in Read180, a program designed to help scholars improve their reading and writing skills with one-on-one support. By the time that school year ended, I was on track but needed more support and my teachers made sure I had it.
After graduating, I attended Park East High School and I loved my experience there. I was able to attend the same high school with my best friend from Girls Prep! My senior year, I was able to balance a job and school and still maintain a 3.5+ GPA.
Now that I am going to college, I feel supported by my community. Attending Barnard College puts pressure on me that I've never had before. I'm still connected with a lot of my former teachers from Girls Prep via Insta and every time I post a milestone they comment with words of encouragement. Hearing things from adults who have known you for years makes a difference in how you view things. The advice I would give any student coming to Girls Prep would be to get good grades! Do your best and always be curious. Your older self will thank your younger self tremendously.
Public Prep alumni have a rich history of postsecondary success. Public Prep's robust support systems are a big part of that-including 6 years of guaranteed postsecondary support. In school and out of school, we believe in youth voice and choice and know that postsecondary success isn't a one-size-fits-all model. We are proud to support our scholars through college and direct-to-career upward pathways so that they can realize their vision of success.
